Managing Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN) Through Sensory Rehabilitation

Speakers: Dr. Hadas Ofek and Dr. Ann Newstead 

Dr. Hadas Ofek is a Neuro-physiotherapist with 27 years of clinical experience; Clinical instructor; with prior management positions as head PT in stroke, SCI and TBI units at Lowenstein rehabilitation center. Hadas holds a lecturer appointment in the Physiotherapy department in Zefat Academic College in northern Israel and is involved both in teaching undergraduate and graduate PT and in research. Her research fields include Sensory Rehabilitation in subjects with acquired neurologic disorders (assessment and treatment) and central neuropathic pain (characterization and sensory treatment). Dr. Ofek's current research involves the implementation of sensory retraining on additional populations (Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathies, amongst others) and exploring the referral and implementation of rehabilitation services in northern Israel. In addition, Hadas works at a private clinic in northern Israel and teaches Sensory Rehabilitation postgraduate courses for PT/ OT clinicians. 

Dr. Ann H. Newstead is a physiotherapist with variety of experiences in rehabilitation. She owns a private practice near San Antonio, TX with focus on older adults. She is a certified specialist through the American Physical Therapy Association in Geriatrics (2005-2025), Neurological (1995-2025) and she has a certification in Vestibular Rehabilitation (1995) and is a Certified Exercise Expert in Aging Adults (2010). She has served as an educator (1987-2017), researcher and mentor. She has published research in the area of yoga, balance, falls, older adults, and brain injury. She currently is a consultant for an ongoing research project GAIT IQ (2018-present) for aging adults. She is currently the secretary of the World Physiotherapy Sub-group: IPT-HOPE. Dr. Newstead is the IPT-HOPE Liaison to the Academy of Oncologic Physical Therapy. She is a member of the Practice Committee for the Texas Physical Therapy Association and Tom Waugh Leadership development mentorship program. 

Session Information: 

This webinar will provide an overview of Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN) and explore strategies for effective rehabilitation. Key topics include: 

  1. An introduction to CIPN and its impact on patients. 
  2. The mechanisms of balance and exercise guidelines for symptom management. 
  3. Insights from Dr. Ofek’s feasibility study on sensory rehabilitation, including the use of the Treatment-Induced Neuropathy Assessment Scale (TNAS). 
  4. A case study demonstrating real-life applications of the discussed concepts. 

 

The presentation will conclude with a Q&A session to address audience questions.
